Gerald R. Ford Amphitheater

The Gerald R. Ford Amphitheater — known locally as “The Amp” — is an iconic outdoor venue nestled in the heart of Vail, Colorado, at the edge of Ford Park along South Frontage Road East. Set against the sweeping backdrop of the Gore Range, the open-air amphitheater draws world-class performers and festival audiences each summer and stands as one of the most scenically dramatic concert settings in the Rocky Mountain West.

The venue opened on June 27, 1987, when former President Gerald R. Ford attended the grand opening ceremony. The nonprofit Vail Valley Foundation led years of fundraising and construction to bring the project to life, with lead architect Jim Morter and Zehren Architects shaping the pavilion’s distinctive design. Willie Nelson headlined the very first major concert on July 16, 1987, setting the tone for decades of eclectic programming. The Foundation has operated the venue continuously ever since, investing in three major renovations — a $9 million expansion in 2001, a $12 million remodel in 2014 that added “The Lobby” entrance area, and a $19 million comprehensive renovation that began in 2025. Artists including Santana, Phish, Bob Dylan, and Death Cab for Cutie have graced the stage over the years.

The Amp accommodates approximately 2,600 guests across two seating configurations. The covered Pavilion holds 1,326 reserved seats divided into four sections, providing shelter from afternoon weather while preserving sightlines to the mountains. The expansive grassy hillside Lawn wraps around the pavilion and offers first-come, first-served blanket seating with unobstructed mountain views. Each summer the venue hosts the Amp Summer Concerts series, the Vail Dance Festival (launched in 1989 with the Bolshoi Ballet Academy), the Bravo! Vail Music Festival (in residence since 1988), the free Hot Summer Nights weekly concerts, and GoPro Mountain Games programming.
