Lionel Richie built his career on some of the smoothest pop and soul songwriting of his era, first with the Commodores and then as a solo artist with hits like "All Night Long," "Hello," and "Say You, Say Me." His voice and his ballads became a fixture of radio for decades, and he later reached a new generation as a judge on American Idol.
