Kelela makes alternative R&B that leans into cold, textured production and a voice that stays cool even when the songs get emotionally heavy. She emerged as part of a wave of artists reshaping R&B through electronic and club music influences, working with producers from the experimental and dance scenes rather than sticking to traditional R&B production. The result is music that feels intimate and slightly futuristic at once.
